Aquatic Invasive Species

Committee Meeting

Monday, February 20, 2012, 6:30 p.m.

Barnes Town Hall

Ingemar Ekstrom called the meeting to order.

Members present:  Ingemar Ekstrom, Barb Romstad, Dave Pease, Sally Pease, Jeremy Bates, Gerald Gustafson (Gus), Lee Wiesner, Mitch McGee, Glenda Mattila, Steve Krivinchuk

Absent:  Pamela Toshner

1.      New Member Introduction

Ingemar introduced Steve Krivinchuk as the new member of the group.

2.      Minutes from the October Meeting

Ingemar reviewed the minutes from the last meeting. A motion to accept the minutes for the October 17th meeting was made by Dave Pease, seconded by Glenda Mattila, passed.

3.      CBCW program review and staffing for 2012

Sally indicated that she thinks all the personnel from last year are returning for the coming summer. There might be some question about Barb but she is pretty sure her health will allow her to come back.

Lee discussed the AIS article in the Lake Tides newsletter. There was a good article about establishing endowment funds for lake associations. The publication also indicated that there is an increased effort in monitoring lakes that do have EWM to make sure boaters are following the guidelines. Ingemar reviewed the activity chart provided to the group by Gus.

Jeremy will be observing boater behaviors this summer at the landings when the monitors are not present.

4.      Volunteer appreciation lunch – May 4, 2012

We will plan to have the annual volunteer luncheon the day before the fishing opener. Barb will take care of getting the word out through mailed invitations and the Barnes Blog. We will invite all of the volunteers as well as shoreline monitors.

5.      Sand Bar Lake aquatic plant survey

The group reviewed the aquatic plant survey of Sand Bar Lake prepared y the WI DNR. The native plants appear to have been affected far less by the 2,4-D application than they were on Tomahawk Lake, which was the goal. The amount of EWM found in Sand Bar Lake after the application is dramatically reduced, though some instances of it were found.

6.       Sand Bar Lake herbicide residual summary

Gus reviewed the document supplied by the Army Corps of Engineers. The 2,4-D stayed at the targeted concentration for about 28 days. By 60-70 days the concentration was barely measurable.

7.       Late Fall Tomahawk Lake Treatment

The group is wondering what affect, if any, the diquat treatment done in October had on the EWM in Tomahawk Lake. How long did the residue stay in the lake?

8.       George Lake

The group discussed the path forward for George Lake this summer. Lee felt the areas where EWM is present should be marked with buoys so the property owners stay away from them. Several people will be looking at the situation in early spring. We know the EWM will be present in the lake (Lee just found some the past weekend when he augured through the ice to fish.) Jeremy will work with Pamela to coordinate a meeting in early April to plan a course of action for possible treatment of George Lake.

9.       Shoreline Monitor Workshop – June 23, 2012

Jeremy is planning to do a workshop to train shoreline monitors in the area. The training will take place in Barnes at the Town Hall. The tentative time for the workshop is 9:00 am- noon.

10.   Bayfield County AIS Activities

Jeremy will be doing a presentation at the AIS Education Summit on the local Eco Field Trips done in the fall and in the spring. Jeremy has given Jim’s Bait the distribution materials for the AIS program. He will get some of the same materials to the Cabin Store.

11.   Other Business

a.      Lloyd Pickering wrote a thank you for the gift certificate he won for being a shoreline monitor.

b.      Where is Matt Berg’s bill? Gus will call him to see if he has submitted it yet.

12.   Next Meeting Monday, April 23, 2012, 6:30 P.M. Barnes Town Hall

Motion to adjourn: Glenda; seconded by Lee; passed

Meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM
