June 20, 2011 Meeting
EWM Committee meeting Monday, June 20, 2011 6:30 p.m. Barnes Town Hall Ingemar Ekstrom called the meeting to order. Members present: Ingemar Ekstrom, Barb Romstad, Dave Pease, Sally Pease, Glenda Mattila, Mitch McGee, Pamela Toshner, Gerald Gustafson (Gus), Lee Wiesner 1. Minutes from the February Meeting Ingemar reviewed the minutes from the last meeting. A motion to accept the minutes for the May 16th meeting was made by Glenda Mattila, seconded by Dave Pease; passed. 2. CBCW program Sally has found a few new volunteers from the ad in the Barnes Blog. On the 4th of July weekend they will work the landings on the Thursday before the 4th weekend and extend some of the hours on Friday. The group discussed extending into some evening hours because the fishermen come later in the evening. The dates of the porta-potty installation were discussed and Ingemar will contact the DNR to find out what the schedule is for future months and next year. Staffing is going well. Over the 4th there will be CBCW hand towels that will be distributed at the landings as a promotion. 3. Donations from POA members The POA has collected between $2,000 and $3,000 for the Town of Barnes EWM program. 4. Northwest Wisconsin Water Guard Tom Werner, a DNR “Water Guard” will visit Lower Eau Claire landing in July to be a monitor for a day. 5. D/O meter workshop Gus attended a D/O metering workshop. Dave Bloomer gave the workshop because some people were having trouble with the metering procedures. Gus indicated that they asked people not to recalibrate the meter. 6. 2011 well monitoring The question was raised who would be doing the well monitoring now that Frank and several other DNR people have retired. Pamela indicated that she thought the testing would be done but could not say who would be doing it. Pamela thought we should find out who wants the well testing done. Ingemar will look back in his files to see where the testing was done in 2008. 7. Shoreline monitors We discussed the task of finding shoreline monitors for the majority of the area lakes. Sally, Ingemar and Lee will review the lakes in the area and discuss possible people who live on the lake and could be contacted to be monitors. They will meet on Tuesday, June 28 at 9:00 am at Lee’s house. 8. Sand Bar Lake progress Gus and Glenda have been on Sand Bar Lake many times taking water samples from several locations and providing them to the Army Corps of Engineers. The lake was treated May 24th, the concentration was .3ppm compared to .5ppm used on Tomahawk. Thanks to Glenda and Gus for their commitment. 9. Milfoil re-establishment in Tomahawk Lake Spots of EWM have been found on Tomahawk Lake, most of it near the boat ramp and fishing pier. John Skogerboe feels it was reintroduced since it is not spread throughout the lake, but no one knows for sure. The group discussed hiring a dive team to pull the EWM. Pamela talked to Matt Berg who is experienced in the technique. A motion was made by Barb Romstad to hire Matt Berg to manually remove the EWM from Tomahawk using funds from the original Tomahawk grant; Lee Wiesner seconded the motion: passed. Matt will be able to give us an idea of the amount of EWM there is in the area he is pulling and then the option of spot chemical treatment can be explored. 10. Other Business · We discussed the early detection grant process. 11. Next Meeting July18, 2011, 6:30 P.M. Barnes Town Hall Motion to adjourn: Lee Wiesner; seconded by Glenda Mattila; passed. Meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM |
